April

Paul Black Trio
Saturday April 24, 8:00pm                                                   Tickets $12
Bluesman Paul Black, a native of Terrace B.C was a late starter on guitar (at age 16), but he has made up, many times over for lost time. Too often, blues players lose their freshness after the first few tracks or plays, but that is not the case here. The original songs by Black have great variety, from a classic Stevie Ray Vaughn sound, through hints of Skynyrd, Hendrix and others. He’s got a great blues voice, sounding rough and worn, but easy to listen to on both the “burners” and the slow tunes too. His great guitar work, both acoustic and electric, is well supported by his trio. Black can go solo as well but this is not a “guitar hero” stuff,
but a well-balanced performance. Fans of good solid blues bands will enjoy this show.

CHLY Fund Raiser
Wednesday April 28, 8:00pm                                                   by donation
He blew us away at Open Mic and now Miles Howe is raising some interest for another good cause.
Miles is going for a walk, from Comox to the Malahat stopping along the way to do what he does best, his music. Great tunes and a totally engaging presence gets you right into the beat and on your feet.
Miles will be joined by ‘New Grass’  Blue grass duo Puzzleroot and other musicians that, like us all have a good reason to support local radio like CHLY.
This promise to be a gas, do not miss out on the fun.

Oh My Darling
Friday April 30, 8:00pm                                                   Tickets $12
Oh My Darling is emerging as a powerhouse of superb female musicianship. Utilizing their keen sense of stylistic versatility, these young women have an vastly eclectic repertoire. Drawing inspiration from traditional music, their original songs are energetic and moving. They infuse their unique brand of country music with the old time sounds of appalachia, a Southern twang, and some funk inspired bass lines that'll get your hips swinging while your toes are tapping. In early 2009 they released their debut, a self-titled EP. Highlighting the beautiful original songs of Vanessa Kuzina (guitar, vocals), the instrumental prowess and unique instrumental compositions of Allison de Groot (banjo, vocals) and Rosalyn Dennett (fiddle, vocals) and the undeniably infectious grooves laid down by Marie-Josee Dandeneau (upright bass), this promising debut gained them attention across Canada, including a nomination for
Best Roots Album at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards.
"Oh My Darling truly is the quintessential roots ensemble. This band of smoking prairie pistols can do no wrong - from their divine melodies to their haunting Appalachian ballads.
Lend an ear people; it simply doesn't get much better than this."

Tuber

Saturday June 12, 8:00pm                                                   Tickets $10

Vancouver Island's most funked up new original band has groove so deep, it's underground! It all grows from an infectious rhythm; the basis for an exciting, highly danceable and totally original night of music. This original sound defies any attempt to categorize it so you can call it Tuber Gruve.

Bass Player Darrell Keeler is Tuber's front man and founder. His songs sprout from strong bass hooks that drive the rhythm. He sings and writes with deep passion and humour, songs which cover a wide range of subject matters from racism to the family cat. His musicianship and writing convey a deep commitment to the power of music to move and uplift the listener. Guitar man and co-founder Dave Hibbert brings the fire! With a heavy edge on both electric guitar and, (as a surprise bonus), the lap steel, he propels the Tuber groove. He has a unique and powerful voice with an astonishing vocal range. Anthony Duke brings the beat, bangin’ big with the hands and feet! The interplay of bass and drums creates that visceral, breathing beast that is the backbone of the Tuber Gruve. Rounding out the band on vocals is Shelley Brown, who’s strong, sweet voice and experience with kick ass tight harmonies is a defining part of Tuber‘s unique vocal sound.

Gene Grooms Duo

Saturday June 19, 8:00pm                                                   Tickets $12

Saltspring Island’s Gene Grooms is a veteran R&B singer and infamous bluesman, as well as a driven songwriter. He's been around the block - listen to his gravelly voice, and you get a much deeper understanding of what the blues are all about. It's unique music, like nothing you've ever heard, yet it has a familiarity that just feels good. Like whiskey and honey.

He's crossed the continent with his music, playing in smoky bars, and soft-seater palaces alike. Gene has shared the stage for the likes of Junior Wells and Amos Garrett. He's played with some of the finest blues artists and this time out has David Roland at his side.

Two "blues gentlemen" with tunes and tales that are most definitely worth a listening.
